Chris Dickey, tuba/euphonium

Chris Dickey is the Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Washington State University. In addition to teaching applied lessons, he conducts the brass ensemble, teaches music theory, coaches chamber music, and performs in the WSU faculty brass quintet. Professor Dickey is in demand as a brass and concert band clinician throughout the region. Recent engagements include public school master classes, large ensemble festival adjudication, guest artist appearances at tuba-euphonium conferences, and serving as the conductor for regional honor band events.

An active performer on both the tuba and euphonium, Professor Dickey has enjoyed a varied performance career. Performance credits include the Walla Walla Symphony, the Washington-Idaho Symphony, the Chicago Brass Band, the National Wind Ensemble, the St. Louis Wind Symphony, the St. Louis Brass Band, and the Eastern Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Dickey has made solo appearances with such groups as the Eastern Symphony Orchestra, the Iowa Chamber Winds, the University of Iowa Concert Band, and the Edwardsville Municipal Band. Additionally, he has performed at regional and international tuba-euphonium conferences as well as attended or performed in master classes with several leading tuba and euphonium pedagogues such as Brian Bowman, Oystein Baadsvik, Steven Mead, Alan Baer, Demondrae Thurmon, Gene Pokorny, and Carol Yantsch.

Equally dedicated to music scholarship, Professor Dickey's research interests focus on brass pedagogy and literature. His publications are available through Brassworks4 Publishing and Cimarron Music Press. He has made contributions to the International Tuba-Euphonium Association Journal as a new materials reviewer and author. Current projects focus on transcriptions for tuba-euphonium ensemble and newly discovered works for the euphonium. His doctoral thesis is an introduction and analysis of the euphonium music of the contemporary Belgian composer Francois Glorieux.

Professor Dickey is in the final stages of the Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University as a student of the world-renowned tuba player Rex Martin. He also studied wind conducting with Mallory Thompson. Professor Dickey earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa with John Manning, the founding member of the critically acclaimed Atlantic Brass Quintet. He received a Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, from Eastern Illinois University as a student of Allan Horney. Professor Dickey performs on a Miraphone 5050T Ambassador euphonium and a Miraphone 281 Firebird tuba. He holds memberships in the International Tuba-Euphonium Association, the College Music Society, the National Association for Music Education, and the National Association of Collegiate Wind and Percussion Teachers.
