Summer Institute

Northwest Brass Summer Institute

Hosted by the University of Idaho

The Northwest Brass Summer Institute (NBSI) is not just another summer brass camp; our curriculum and location set us apart, and the McCall Brass Idol contest makes our summer camp an experience unlike any other.

As described in our Mission Statement, the Northwest Brass strives to help music students develop leadership, entrepreneurship, and business skills in addition to musicianship. While improving as instrumentalists and musicians will always be one of our top priorities as teachers, the NBSI is designed to foster this extended growth.

Curriculum - We offer courses in musicianship, music theory, ear training, arranging, entrepreneurship, and most importantly chamber music. We welcome both individuals and pre-formed ensembles, and any combination of brass instruments will be accepted. Discounts are available when signing up as a pre-formed group. Curriculum Levels

High School Students (Individual or pre-formed ensemble)

High School Teachers (In-service credit available)

Undergraduate Students (Individual or pre-formed ensemble)

One pre-formed graduate quintet (or equivalent experience) will be offered a Teaching Assistantship

Location - Set in the stunning resort town of McCall, Idaho, all NBSI activities are based at the McCall Outdoor Science School of the University of Idaho-McCall. In addition to the activities of the NBSI, all particpants will have access to a myriad of outdoor activities including hiking, swimming, and mountain biking.

McCall Brass Idol (better name pending...) - The NBSI culminates on Friday with an all-day competition spanning the town of McCall. Working with local businesses, each chamber group will take the lessons learned in the classroom and rehearsal space and apply them by performing across McCall. With over 25 performance venues, each ensemble will perform their repertoire as often and in as many settings as possible in order to gather 'Votes of Appreciation'. The group with the most Votes at the end of the day will earn the priviledge of performing alongside the NBSI faculty on the Finale Concert.

Currently, the NBSI is intended to be held annually in mid-June, although this will change with the faculty members' availability.
